Australian Pallet Standards

The standard Australian pallet is 1165mm x 1165mm (often called a "Chep pallet" after the dominant rental provider). Euro pallets (1200x800mm) are also used, particularly for import/export. Maximum height is typically 1800mm including the pallet deck (~150mm), giving ~1650mm of usable stacking height. Most 3PLs and retailers cap pallet weight at 1000kg for standard racking, though some heavy-goods warehouses allow up to 1500kg. Always confirm weight and height limits with your warehouse or carrier before loading. Overhang beyond the pallet edge is generally discouraged for racked storage but may be acceptable for floor-stacked or direct-to-truck loads.

Pallet loading optimisation for Australian warehouses

Efficient pallet loading directly impacts freight costs, warehouse storage density, and order fulfilment speed. Under-utilised pallets mean you are paying for air - both in storage space and transport capacity. Over-loaded or poorly stacked pallets create safety hazards and increase damage rates. The goal is to maximise cartons per pallet within both height and weight constraints.

The standard Australian pallet (often called a CHEP pallet) measures 1165mm x 1165mm. Most Australian warehouses using selective racking set a maximum pallet height of 1800mm (including the 150mm pallet deck) and a maximum weight of 1000kg. Euro pallets (1200mm x 800mm) are common for import/export and fit standard 20ft and 40ft shipping containers more efficiently - you can fit 11 Euro pallets in a 20ft container versus 10 Australian standard pallets.

When loading cartons, the orientation matters significantly. Rotating cartons 90 degrees can sometimes fit an additional column or row per layer. Most 3PLs and retailers do not permit overhang beyond the pallet edge for racked storage (it creates fork-lift access issues and can cause product falls), but overhang may be acceptable for floor-stacked or direct-to-vehicle loads. Always confirm requirements with your warehouse or transport provider.

How does AP automation help with warehouse cost management?

Warehouse and 3PL invoices are often charged per pallet space per week. Automating the capture and coding of these invoices allows you to track storage costs over time, verify that you are being billed for the correct number of pallets, and identify opportunities to consolidate or reduce inventory levels. Pulsify captures warehouse invoices and codes them automatically to your storage cost accounts.
