Why business day calculations matter for Australian businesses
Many business obligations in Australia are defined in business days rather than calendar days. Supplier payment terms (e.g., net 30 business days), contract notice periods, regulatory response deadlines, and shipping lead times all typically exclude weekends and public holidays. Getting these calculations wrong can mean missed deadlines, late payment fees, or breached contractual obligations.
How to use this business days calculator
- Select a mode: count business days between two dates, add a number of business days to a start date, or calculate the calendar day difference.
- Choose the state or territory to include the correct public holidays (national and state-specific).
- Enter your start date and end date (or number of days to add).
- Review the result, which excludes weekends and all applicable public holidays for the selected state.
Australian public holidays by state and territory
Australia has 8 national public holidays, but the total number of non-working days varies by state. Victoria has Melbourne Cup Day (metro only), Queensland has the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka), and each state observes the King's Birthday on different dates - June in most states but September in WA and Queensland. Tasmania adds Recreation Day in the north, while the ACT has Reconciliation Day and Family & Community Day. This calculator includes both national and state-specific holidays for 2025-2026, so your business day counts are accurate regardless of which jurisdiction you operate in.
Common uses for business day calculations
For accounts payable, knowing the exact business day a payment is due helps with cash flow planning. If an invoice is dated with 30-day terms and you need to know the exact due date accounting for weekends and holidays, this tool gives you the answer instantly. Other common uses include calculating Fair Work notice periods (which are measured in weeks but depend on business days for practical scheduling), BAS lodgement deadlines, contract milestones, and construction project timelines where weather days and public holidays both affect delivery dates.
How AP automation handles payment due dates
Pulsify automatically extracts payment terms from supplier invoices, calculates due dates (accounting for business days where specified), and schedules payments for approval before they are due. This eliminates the risk of late payments and helps you capture early payment discounts when offered.
