Splitting a bill across jobs or cost centres means giving each line of one supplier invoice its own job, department or project so costs land where they belong. In Business Central you do it with dimensions.
Before you start
- Dimensions set up in General Ledger Setup
The Business Central way
Where to find it: Purchase Invoices > Lines, Dimensions action; Dimensions page
- Set up dimensions such as Department or Project and their values.
- Mark two as shortcut dimensions so they show as columns on lines.
- On each invoice line pick the dimension values. Use one line per part of the cost.
- Post.
Limits in Business Central
- You split by entering separate lines. No percentage allocation on a purchase line was found.
- Only the global and shortcut dimensions show as columns by default.
Good to know in Business Central
- Dimension set entries store the values, so you can analyse by any dimension later.
- Posted wrong dimensions can be corrected with the dimension correction tool.
Words Business Central uses
- Dimension. A tag on a transaction, such as department or project, used to report cost without extra accounts.
The Pulsify way
- Forward the supplier's invoice to your Pulsify address. Pulsify reads every row as its own line.
- Review each line and set its account. Line-item coding learns from how that vendor was coded before.
- Approve. The purchase invoice is created in Business Central with one line per row.
Pulsify connects to Business Central. We set up the connection for you.
What Pulsify does not do here
- Pulsify does not split a line by percentage. A shared cost needs separate lines with set amounts.
- Tagging a line to dimensions is done in Business Central unless the line already carries it.
Example in Business Central
Example Timber Supplies sends one purchase invoice for two sites. Total $4,400 including GST. Your company has a SITE dimension set as shortcut dimension 3.
| Line | Amount | Tagged to |
|---|---|---|
| Framing timber, Site A | $2,200.00 | SITE: SITE-A |
| Framing timber, Site B | $1,400.00 | SITE: SITE-B |
| Delivery, Site A share | $200.00 | SITE: SITE-A |
| Delivery, Site B share | $200.00 | SITE: SITE-B |
After posting, filter G/L entries by the SITE dimension. SITE-A shows $2,400 and SITE-B shows $1,600, before GST.
Common mistakes
- Setting the dimension on the invoice header only, when each line needs a different value.
- Making Project a dimension when you already use the Jobs (Projects) module, so the same cost is tagged two ways.

Common questions
Can Business Central split a purchase line by percentage?
No percentage allocation on a purchase invoice line was found in Microsoft's docs. Enter one line per share of the cost, each with its own dimension values.
What are shortcut dimensions?
Business Central has two global dimensions and up to six more shortcut dimensions. Shortcut dimensions can show as columns on invoice lines, so you can pick values without opening the Dimensions page.
Can I fix a wrong dimension after posting?
Yes. Microsoft documents a dimension correction tool for posted general ledger entries. It changes the dimension values without reversing the invoice.
