A pre-BAS GST check means reviewing bills for wrong tax codes, missing tax invoices and suppliers not registered for GST before you claim credits.
Before you start
- Reports access
The AccountRight way
Where to find it: Reports > Index to Reports > GST tab
- Run GST [Detail - Accrual/Invoice] or GST [Detail - Cash/Payments] for the BAS period.
- Check each tax code on bills.
- Run the Tax/GST Amount Variance report to find manual changes.
- Use Prepare your activity statement and Lodge your activity statement when ready.
Limits in AccountRight
- Choose cash or accrual to match your BAS basis.
What to watch in AccountRight
- Run GST [Detail - Accrual/Invoice] if your BAS is on an accrual basis. Run GST [Detail - Cash/Payments] if it is on a cash basis.
- The reports sit under Reports > Index to Reports > GST tab. You need Reports access.
- The Tax/GST Amount Variance report is the only report here that finds tax edited by hand.
- Use Prepare your activity statement and Lodge your activity statement only after the codes are right.
The Pulsify way
- Forward bills to Pulsify through the period.
- Pulsify sets a GST code on each line from the rate printed on that line.
- Pulsify flags a supplier ABN that is not registered for GST when GST is charged.
- Review flags before approval, so fewer errors reach AccountRight.
Pulsify connects to MYOB in one click. Approved bills are created in MYOB with the source file attached.
What Pulsify does not do here
- Pulsify does not lodge or prepare your BAS.
- It does not check bills already in AccountRight.
Example in AccountRight
Example Hardware Supplies bills a tap set in the quarter. The GST amount on the bill was typed over by hand before it was recorded. The bookkeeper runs the GST report that matches the BAS basis and then the variance report.
| Line | Amount | Tagged to |
|---|---|---|
| Bill total including GST | $143.00 | GST [Detail - Accrual/Invoice] report |
| GST calculated by AccountRight | $13.00 | Tax/GST Amount Variance report |
| GST typed over by hand | $14.00 | Shows as a manual change on the variance report |
The variance report lists the bill because the tax amount differs from the calculated amount. The bookkeeper fixes the amount, reruns the GST report and then goes to Prepare your activity statement.
Common mistakes
- Running the cash report when your BAS is on an accrual basis.
- Editing calculated tax and not running the Tax/GST Amount Variance report afterwards.
