Splitting a bill across jobs or cost centres means giving each line of one supplier invoice its own job, department or project so costs land where they belong. In Sage Intacct you do it with dimensions.
Before you start
- Accounts Payable subscription
- Business user with Bills: List, View, Add permission
- Transaction allocations turned on in General Ledger
The Sage Intacct way
Where to find it: Accounts Payable > All > Add next to Bills; General Ledger > Allocations > Transaction allocations
- Create a transaction allocation definition (General Ledger > Allocations > Transaction allocations). Choose Percentage, Exact amount or Fixed amount with over/under logic and list the dimension values.
- On the bill, select the line and choose the Allocation template. Intacct fills in the dimension values and splits the amount.
- To change a split on one line select Show details and Customize allocation. The allocation then shows as Custom.
- Post or submit the bill.
Limits in Sage Intacct
- Percentage splits for bills need the transaction allocations feature switched on.
- Purchasing transactions only support percentage allocations.
- Location and Department cannot be edited by reclassifying a line that has an allocation selected.
Good to know in Sage Intacct
- You can also split by simply adding lines with different Department or Location values.
Words Sage Intacct uses
- Dimension. A tag on a transaction line, such as department, location, project or class. You report by any mix of them.
The Pulsify way
- Forward the supplier's invoice to your Pulsify address. Pulsify reads every row as its own line.
- Review each line and set its account. Line-item coding learns from how that vendor was coded before.
- Approve. The bill is created in Sage Intacct with one line per row.

What Pulsify does not do here
- Pulsify does not split a line by percentage. A shared cost needs separate lines with set amounts.
- Tagging a line to dimensions is done in Sage Intacct unless the line already carries it.
Example in Sage Intacct
Example Timber Supplies sends one bill for $4,400 including GST. The $400 delivery uses a transaction allocation of 50% Location Site A and 50% Location Site B.
| Line | Amount | Tagged to |
|---|---|---|
| Framing timber, Site A | $2,200.00 | Location: Site A |
| Framing timber, Site B | $1,400.00 | Location: Site B |
| Delivery $400 | $400.00 | Allocation: Site A 50%, Site B 50% |
The delivery line splits into $200 for each location. Site A carries $2,400 and Site B $1,600 before GST.
Common mistakes
- Trying to reclassify the Location or Department on a line that has an allocation selected.
- Choosing an allocation for a purchasing transaction that is not a percentage type.

Common questions
Can Sage Intacct split a bill by percentage?
Yes, with transaction allocations. Turn the feature on in General Ledger, create an allocation with Percentage, Exact amount or Fixed amount, then pick the template on the bill line.
Do I need an allocation to split a bill?
No. You can also split by adding lines with different Department or Location values. Use an allocation when you split the same way often.
Can I change one split without changing the template?
Yes. Select Show details and Customize allocation on the line. The allocation then shows as Custom. Purchasing transactions only support percentage allocations.
